LED landscape lighting solutions

LED Landscape Lighting solutions that work

Replacement LED lamps seems like a rather simple and eligant retrofit solution for existing landscape lighting systems, but one particular style of retrofit lamp clearly produces superior results. Retrofit LED solutions that rely upon the installation of replacement lamps with both a driver and emitter are extremely limited by their lack of lamping choices and have a significant risk of premature failure. MR16 replacement lamps are particularly limited in their light output choices. Most can only produce the equivalent of a 20W halogen lamp.

There is a retrofit solution that moves the LED driver outside of the landscape luminary. This approach allows a much broader selection of lamping options and eliminates one of the biggest sources of heat inside the luminary (heat is what causes premature failure in other retrofit solutions). You do not need to replace or refurbish your existing lighting fixtures with this effective LED option. The driver is simply installed on the outside of the fixture and you replace the lamp. Because of its size, the emitter only LED lamp also removes the risk of your fixtures being too small. Landscape lighting should not suffer from limited light output just because you made the choice to go green with LED. Read more here

Are 24 volt landscape lighting systems a wise choice?

More 24 volt landscape lighting systems have been sold and installed in the North Shore area (Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, Glenview, Northfield, Highland Park and Lake Forest) than any other area in the entire state of Illinois. These systems make it easier and more efficient to install large landscape lighting systems, but what impact will LED have on these systems? Should people still purchase these systems with LED technology available? Are 24 volt systems compatible with LED technology? Read more here.

Companies offering designs over the phone!

I called for information on a recent ad run by a large national chain. The sales person offered to do a lighting design and quote via use of Google Earth; all I had to do was provide my address over the phone. We do custom designs based upon actual site visits! How else can you accurately create a dramatic, custom landscape lighting design that takes advantage of your unique, local architectural and site details? Read more here.

Outdoor Lighting Advice

Selecting quality landscape lighting fixtures

Selecting a quality lighting fixture has a direct bearing on the longevity and reliability of your landscape lighting systems. Install an aluminum based fixture and you are headed for problems. Brass and copper are much better choices, but thin walled copper fixtures can also be problematic. Read more here to help you understand and select quality lighting products that won't lead to failures and expensive repair bills.

Selecting a quality landscape lighting installation service

Much can be determined about a company, their attitudes and priorities by a study of their electrical connections in a lighting system installation. This seemingly simple task has the single biggest impact upon the longevity and reliability of a lighting system.

An electrical connection must first and foremost provide electrical continuity. Continuity can not be maintained if the connection is allowed to leak moisture or moisture laded air; therefore, it must be made air and water proof. The stability and longevity of water and air proofing is extremely important to long term reliability. The connection must also be secured. With frost heaving wires out of the ground and planting activities in the landscape, securing a wire connection can be a challenge. Also, a nick made in a cable with your shovel can cause water-wicking through the electrical cables. Connections should be made so as to block water wicking. Finally, an electrical connection must insulate. Read more here on how to select an installation service
